queer-coded

/kwɪər koʊd.ɪd/

Common

A character, scene, or piece of media that reads as queer without being explicitly labeled as such.

Often used as both a positive read (claiming a character as queer representation) and a criticism (pointing out that a story queercodes without committing). The line between intentional coding and projection is a frequent debate.
