On 4chan this is universal. On other platforms it is often used with a tone of ironic distance or gentle mockery.

Use it when
- Addressing or referring to someone on an anonymous imageboard.
- Ironically addressing someone whose identity you are leaving out.

Do not use it when
- You want to say someone is genuinely anonymous or has hidden their identity.Use “anonymous” instead.
Origin and context
Shortened from 'anonymous', the default display name on 4chan and similar imageboards. On those platforms no registration is required, so every post defaults to 'Anonymous' and the community shortened it to 'anon'.
