Widely considered unfair. Some players justify it as practice on off-meta picks. Others use it to avoid ranked pressure on their main account.

Origin and context
Gaming slang since at least the late 1990s. Two high-ranked Warcraft II players created low-level accounts named PapaSmurf and Smurfette to play incognito. The term stuck and spread to describe any skilled player hiding behind a low-rank account.
