rubber banding

/ˈrʌbər ˌbændɪŋ/

Common

A game mechanic that artificially helps losing players catch up to keep the race competitive.

Can mean two different things: the intentional mechanic (catch-up system), or lag-induced teleporting where your character snaps back to a previous position after a connection hiccup. Context usually makes it clear which one.
