morally grey character

Very Common

A fictional character who operates outside clear good or evil categories, with understandable motivations for doing bad things.

A compliment in book communities. Calling a character morally grey is almost always praise. Different from 'complex' or 'flawed' in that the grey part specifically means their ethics are genuinely questionable.
