Can be light and jokey between friends, but usually carries a negative connotation online. Calling something gatekeeping is almost always a criticism.

Use it when
- Someone tells another person they aren't a 'real' fan because they don't know obscure trivia.

- Someone sets arbitrary skill or knowledge requirements to join a community.
- A person polices who gets to use a label or identity.
Do not use it when
- Someone is setting legitimate quality standards in a professional context.
- You just mean someone is being protective of something.Use “protective” instead.
