Controlling who is allowed to belong to a group or enjoy something by setting arbitrary standards.

Can be light and jokey between friends, but usually carries a negative connotation online. Calling something gatekeeping is almost always a criticism.

Use it when

  • Someone tells another person they aren't a 'real' fan because they don't know obscure trivia.
  • A person insists others can't enjoy something unless they've been into it since the beginning.
  • Someone sets arbitrary skill or knowledge requirements to join a community.
  • A person polices who gets to use a label or identity.

Do not use it when

  • Someone is setting legitimate quality standards in a professional context.
  • You just mean someone is being protective of something.Use “protective” instead.
