Very CommonSomeone who pulls back from closeness in relationships and shuts down when things get too emotionally intense.
Two subtypes exist: dismissive (doesn't want closeness) and fearful (wants it but fears it). Online conversation mostly uses the word without distinguishing them.

Use it when
- Someone consistently withdraws or goes cold when a relationship reaches real emotional depth.
- Someone has a strong need for independence that makes sustained intimacy difficult.
- Describing the relationship pattern of pulling away when someone gets too close.
Do not use it when
- You just mean someone is introverted.Use “introverted” instead.
- You mean someone is afraid of commitment without knowing their pattern.
- You mean someone is emotionally unavailable from circumstance, not pattern.

From attachment theory. The avoidant category was identified by Mary Ainsworth in her Strange Situation experiments. Online shorthand usage grew noticeably from 2020 onward through relationship psychology content.
